Shri Shivaji Preparatory Military School popularly knows as "SSPMS" is located at Shivajinagar, Pune, This school was found in June 1932 and is being managed by the All India Shri Shivaji Memorial Society, Pune. the Inaugural Ceremony of the School was performed on 20th September 1933 by His Excellency Sir Frederick Skyes, the Governor of Bombay.
This is an English Medium school which is recognized by the Department of Education, Government of Maharashtra. French language is also taught for 9th and 10th class students.
As a member of Indian Public Schools Conference, it provides a liberal all round education, which enables students to take with confidence the Union Public Service Commission Examinations for admission to the National Defence Academy (NDA) Khadakwasla Pune. Compulsory NCC training & defence studies as school subjects, motivates and prepares boys for career in defence forces.
In all sections, stress is laid on co-relating the work in the classroom with the common & essential needs of the growing child. Field Trips & Excursions are being organized to centers of farming, industrial production, countryside & historical forts for getting in touch with nature and for understanding the aspirations of the community at large.
The Academic session of the school starts on 1st June and ends on 31st March. There are two terms in the school. The first term is from June to October and second term is from November to March. There is a primary section, secondary section and higher secondary division in the school.
In the begining it was only Boys school which offered high quality education. Since it is a military school, defence oriented learning is also provided for getting admission to national defence academy ( NDA).
The School campus has a main building, a kitchen refectory, hospital, staff quarters, Students hostels, Gymnasium, etc. An amphitheatre is also available which is well-suited for conducting cultural and social functions. Coaching is given in philately, aero-modeling, ship-modeling, metalwork, music and orchestra, art and craft, clay-modeling, and gardening. Various sports activities are also conducted to develop the physical fitness of the students.
The admissions to the school are normally done at the begining of the academic year. The candidate has to take a qualifying test in English, Mathematics and General Knowledge (all papers in English), and appear at interview for getting admission.
The fees and expenses for a Border from Pre-Primary class to std. IV are Rs. 53,000/- per year and from std. X are Rs. 55,000/- per annum. This amount can be paid either in lumpsum or in two instalments in the two semesters.
NCC is compulsory for all the students in the school. The School's NCC consists of the three wings Army, Navy & Airforce with 50 cadets in each wing. The Naval wing has been kept in discipline by the Principal Mr. P.T.Sarode for last 25 years as "Chief Officer".
In the past the teaching was only upto higher secondary school education from LKG onwards and that too only for Boys. Now it has changed and now there is an engineering college, management school, polytechnic, and even girls are being admitted into the school. Very soon it may become a deemed university.
