The Film and Television Institute of India is one of the leading training institutes in India imparting training for the future Film actors and actresses. This Institute is located on the Law College road just one kilometer from Deccan Gymkhana in Pune city.
Film and Television Institute of India is spread over an area of 20 acres, and was founded in the year 1960. The main aim of establishing this institute is to train people in the field of art and film making.
Today the Film and Television Institute of India (FTII) is considered as a Center of Excellence not only in India but also in Asia and Europe. The films made by the students of this famous institute are shown in festivals in India and also abroad. Some of them also were awarded with National and International awards.
History of Film and Television Institute of India
The Film and Television Institute of India is an autonomous institute under the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting, Govt. of India. This institute is located in the premises of Prabhat Film Company in Pune.
The Film and Television Institute of India was established in the year 1960 and the courses started from the year 1961. The television training wing of this institute was functioning in New Delhi earlier and later on shifted to Pune in the year 1974. There after the Institute is fully aided by the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting, Government of India. The objective of establishing the Film and Television Institute of India is to impart training in film making and television program production.
The Government of India has purchased the land where the well-known Prabhat Film Company was making films. The Government established the Film and Television Institute of India after purchasing the land from Prabhat Film company in the year 1960. Today we can still see the studios of Prabhat to continue and are in use by the students for their various exercises. These studios have been declared as heritage sites by the Pune Muncipal Corporation. The Television wing which was located in Mandi House, New Delhi was later shifted to Pune campus in 1974. This wing was primarily concerned with conducting in-service training for employees of Door Darshan.
Courses Offered at Film and Television Institute of India, Pune
This institute offers different courses in the areas of Direction, Editing, Screen Play, Photography, Music. The courses started in a full fledged manner from the year 1961 and is aided by ministry of information and broadcasting, Government of India. There are very famous directors, actors, producers who were trained in this institute. Subhash Ghai, Jaya Bhaduri,Mani Kaul, Raj Kumar Hirani,Nasiruddin Shah, Raza Murad, Shatrughan Sinha, Mithun Chakraborty, Tom Alter, Kanwarjit Paintal, Adoor Gopal Krishnan, Sanjay Leela Bhansali, Vidhu Vinod Chopra are alumnies of this Institute.
The present director of the institute is Mr. Pankaj Rag, IAS.
