International Blue Notice Alert for Lalit Modi, former IPL Head


TheEnforcement Directorate(ED), which is probing alleged violations under the Foreign Exchange Management Act (FEMA) against various IPL franchises, has issued an International Blue Notice Alert for detention of Lalit Modi, former IPL Head.

The Directorate is looking into the alleged "serious contraventions" of the foreign exchange law into T20 finances of cricket tournaments. Mumbai Office of the ED has asked law enforcement agencies across the globe that "Modi should be detained as and when noticed" and the ED be informed immediately.
The Alert Notice has been served with the concurrence of Interpol, and bears full particulars including passport and photograph, and other details. ED has said that Modi has been "involved i in serious contraventions of the Foreign Exchange Management Act 1999, in connection with the IPL." It further adds that Modi has misused his official position as Chairman of IPL and amassed foreign exchange outside the country and made substantial investments in some IPL franchises through his front companies abroad. Recently two more IPL teams, Sahara Pune Warriors and Kochi were auctioned in April this year.
He has not responded to the summons issued by the Directorate. By Non compliance of the summons, he is stalling the investigation conducted by ED the notice further says.. Once such an alert is issued against an individual by a law enforcement agency in India, counterpart agency in any foreign land can intercept and question the person who has been flagged, they said.
, Modi''s counsel Mehmood Abidi has termed the issuance of notice as an "extreme step" which is taken for "hardened criminals" and questioned the need for it. "Mr Modi has been cooperating with the Enforcement Directorate authorities. All the summons which have been issued have been duly and properly replied. All the documents which have been called for have been provided," he said.
